Music is incredible. It can excite hundreds, and unite thousands. But as an industry, it has been slow, complicated, and disparate. While the tech world has moved into the future, the music industry continues to be shaped by inefficient systems of the past. At Utopia we believe there is a better way. Which is why today we are setting out to transform the entire industry; creating new revenue streams, consolidating the data and decluttering the admin. Unlocking the industry’s full potential by unifying it all in one truly holistic space. Some might call that a Utopia.

Funnily enough, so do we. Welcome to Utopia. Where music lives.

We are building a better world for music with innovative big data technology that tracks online music sources and translates them into meaningful music consumption reports for royalty collection. The solution we’re building does not threaten to usurp the role of industry incumbents - it is about bringing transparency in the industry and supporting efficient royalty collection.

We are looking for Data Scientists / AI Specialists in the field of Automatic Music Tagging through Deep Learning. Thanks to Musimap joining the Utopia family you can build on a set of Deep Learning models already in use for the detection of genres, moods, vocal family etc. We would like you to enhance those models, adopt state-of-the-art AI methods and also expand our scope of analysis to further music properties such as e.g. instrumentation.

  • Research the state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning techniques in the field of music analysis & music tagging
  • Prototype and productize new algorithms with state-of-the-art machine / deep learning frameworks in Python
  • Coordinate with a team of musicologists for the creation of an expert knowledge-base (groundtruth)
  • Train models for genre & style analysis, mood analysis, instrument detection, language detection, and more
  • Implement working, deployable and scalable systems for large-scale music analysis from audio
  • Collaborate and thrive in a cross-functional team of data scientists, AI experts, data engineers, software engineers and musicologists

  • MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Music Informatics, AI or related fields
  • Experience in machine learning and deep learning (preferably in the field of audio/music/DSP)
  • Ideally experience in music analysis, machine learning from audio and/or digital signal processing
  • Ideally industry experience and/or experience with big data environments
  • Good knowledge of Python and relevant frameworks (such as pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch ...)
  • Good programming skills and rigor in documentation and testing
  • Goal-driven and product-oriented mindset
  • Ability to work independently, but also as a good team-worker
  • Proficiency in English

Bonus skills:

  • Experience with AWS, Google Cloud, CI/CD, MLOps, ...

  • Great atmosphere - we live, love & breathe music & tech!
  • Working in a passionate and impact oriented team at the intersection of music & AI.
  • The opportunity to work in a real-world setting, building products that work on the entire global music catalogue with major players in the music industry.
  • An experienced team to learn from, with experience in multiple domains, startups and big tech companies.
  • Nice offices in London, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Zug (Switzerland) (more to come…) + option to work remotely if you are in another country
  • Flexible remote policy so if you prefer working from home - we’re fine with that too.
  • Participation in music & tech conferences.
  • Benefits such as health benefits etc. depend on location.
  • We are supporting work permits for employees that have already moved to Europe from countries outside the EU. However, we do not support relocation at the moment.

Perks & Benefits

If you are not yet convinced by our awesome team and great atmosphere — here you have some extra frosting on the cake.

  • 🏋️‍♀️ Active work space

At the Stockholm office we have a ping pong table and a gym in the basement and people are encouraged to use them both. We also have a generous wellness grant for anyone who prefer to do other things.

  • ☕️ Breakfast every morning

Every morning we gather around the bar for breakfast. It is of course voluntary but the coffee is great.

  • 👾 A bunch of nerds

We love what we do and we do what we love. So there will be a lot of interesting discussions going on about pretty much anything connected to music or tech and a lot of Star Wars references to acompany those.

  • 🏰 A little here and a little there

We love to work together. Where exactly that is at the moment is less important.

Work @ Utopia

Do you like to work in teams with a lot of individual responsibility? Yes, we know it sound cliché but this is also how it actually is.

Every morning after breakfast we gather in our teams to plan the day, assign tasks to kickstart the days. Agile, fast and inventive is how we like it. That also gives us room to pair up or hold a workshop if we need help in finding the best solution.

A helping hand and a good coffee might just be what we need to get things done.
