WHAT UTOPIANS DO
The open secret is that the music industry is struggling with the very basics of music accounting: What was played, when and where? Who should get paid and how much?
Utopia Music is bridging the data gap by connecting global consumption, accurate metadata, and fast payments to an industry-wide trust platform. Our goal is to unlock creative value and enable Fair Pay For Every Play to make a better world for Music. The solutions we offer do not threaten to usurp the role of industry incumbents - it is about bringing transparency in the industry and supporting efficient royalty collection for all.
THE ROLE
We work in teams of 3-5 engineers, a product manager, a designer, and a data scientist. You’ll be working on Utopia products built on the Utopia big data platform with a focus on the Creator community. We work full-stack, including the data layer, product infrastructure and user experience. We take a holistic approach to product creation from data to robust backend and customer experience.
We’re looking for an experienced Backend Engineer, who will work closely with other engineers to create incredible backend services and infrastructure-as-code that power our products. Depending on your experience and strengths, we will find the right role for you in the team.
REQUIREMENTS
We are not dogmatic about tech stack and we welcome experienced developers with different skills. Our stack is a mix of technologies, using languages and frameworks such as (but not limited to) Golang, Ruby, Sinatra, and Node.js. We use Kubernetes as our application environment, we build our infrastructure as code, and we run all of our services in Google’s Cloud Platform.
You are a passionate and skilled developer that already has several years of experience working in a Backend Engineer role.
- Proficiency in working with compiled languages (such as Golang, or Rust) and/or interpreted languages (such as Ruby, or Javascript).
- Experience creating and consuming performant REST & RPC APIs that power world-class applications.
- Familiarity with Google Cloud, GKE, and CI/CD skills are highly valued.
- High-quality code is even more important to you than the Force.
- You love to learn and you love to share your knowledge and mentor others.
- You’ve worked with and administrated databases engines such as MongoDB and Elasticsearch.
- Good communications skills, fluency in English.
- Good self-organisation skills and strong personal integrity.

THE HIRING PROCESS
- You send us your CV and a cover letter in English.
- We invite you for an introductory phone/video call to get to know you better and share more about us.
- You get a programming exercise and unlimited time to send us your solution.
- Our lead developers evaluate it and we provide you with the feedback.
- Then we’ll have an “on site” interview where you will talk to one of our lead developers and the hiring manager, and one more person from our awesome interview team.

Do you like to work in teams with a lot of individual responsibility? Yes, we know it sound cliché but this is also how it actually is.
Every morning after breakfast we gather in our teams to plan the day, assign tasks to kickstart the days. Agile, fast and inventive is how we like it. That also gives us room to pair up or hold a workshop if we need help in finding the best solution.
